The Breed
The Manchester Terrier is a breed of dog that originated in Manchester England, during the 1800's. Today's Manchesters are popular house pets. They are extremely loyal to their owners and make excellent watchdogs.
Conformation:
The Manchester terrier has two varieties -- the standard and the toy. The standard stands from 14 to 16 inches at the shoulder and weighs 12 to 22 pounds. Their ears droop naturally. The toy Manchester can weigh from 5 to 12 pounds. Our Manchesters weigh from around 6 to 10 pounds and measure 11 to 14 inches high at the shoulder. These toy dogs have ears, unlike those of the standard, which are naturally erect. Manchester terriers have a smooth, very black coat. They have a tan mark over each eye, on each cheek, and on the chest. The mark on the chest is almost shaped like the letter V. Sometimes this mark is white in color but is normally smaller than a dime. The Manchester's ears are set high on its long, narrow head and it's tail is a narrow thin whip-like tail.
